The Primera División of the ‘Liga de Fútbol Profesional’ aka La Liga is Spain’s top football division. La Liga one of the top football leagues in the world, currently ranked second in Europe behind the English Premier League. Overall a total of 58 teams have competed in La Liga and since the ‘50s the league has been dominated by Barcelona and Madrid.
La Liga’s season runs from September to June with each football club playing each other twice for a total of 38 games. Teams are ranked by total points, with the highest-ranked club at the end of the season crowned champion. Like many other football leagues there is a system of promotion and relegation existing between the ‘Primera División‘ and the ‘Segunda División’. The three lowest placed teams relegated to the Segunda División and vica- versa.
On the international front the top four teams in La Liga qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The fifth and sixth placed teams qualify for the first round of the UEFA Cup.
