SPL info

The Scottish Premier League is a professional league competition above the Scottish Football League founded in 1998. Originally the SPL featured 10 football clubs and now contains twelve top clubs. Previous to this the SPL was split into division one and two however in 1994 a four division structure was introduced.

The structure of the Scottish Premier League is similar to other leagues round Europe. Clubs receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. At the end of the football season the bottom placed SPL club is relegated, and swaps places with the winner of the Scottish First Division.

When it comes to Europe the SPL is currently ranked tenth in UEFA's ‘co-efficient’ ranking thus two SPL clubs qualify for the UEFA Champions League
