Premier League info

The Premier League aka Premiership is England’s primary football competition.  There are 20 teams involved within the Premier League with football seasons running from August to May (teams play 38 games each). Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. At the end of the season the three lowest placed teams are relegated into the Championship.

The Premier League was formed in 1992 following the decision of the top clubs in League one to split away (which itself was formed in 1888). This was a rather canny decision as the Premiership is now the world's most watched sporting league with a combined club revenue of around £ 1.8 billion.

Although over 40 clubs have competed in the Premier League only four have won the title including Manchester United, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea.

Premier League 'top 5' stats

1/ Top all time scorer - Alan Shearer (260 goals)
2/ First team to host a full 'foreign squad' - Arsenal (2005)

4/ Most Premier League appearances - David James (535)
5/ Most Premier League titles - Manchester United (8)
