Liga info

Portugal's liga is a professional league for Portugese football clubs and Portugal's primary football competition. Currently the Liga is made up of sixteen clubs (down from 18) and like most leagues dominated by three teams; Benfica, Porto and Sporting Club. Liga Sagres is currently ranked '8th' by UEFA.

From 1938 to 2000, the Liga was named ‘Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão’. However when the Portuguese League took control of the two nationwide leagues in 1999, it was renamed ‘Primeira Liga’. From the 08-09 season, the Liga has been named ‘Liga Sagres’due to its sponsor.

During the course of a season, each club plays all teams twice, for a total of 30 games. At the end of each season, the two bottom teams are relegated to the ‘Liga de Honra’. The top two teams in the Portuguese Liga qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
