Serie A info
Serie A is a professional league for Italian football clubs. Serie A was founded in 1929 and is now seen as one of the top leagues in the world. Unlike other football league Serie A has produced the highest number of European Cup finalists and the league is currently ranked third by UEFA.
Currently there are 20 clubs within Serie A and during the course of a season (August to May) each club plays each of the other teams twice. The first half of the Italian football season is called the andata and the second half of the season is the ritorno. As Italy is currently third in the UEFA rankings the top four Serie A teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Serie A introduced their ‘gold star’ rating for teams that had won multiple championships. The first Serie A team to adopt a star was Juventus (Milan and Internazionale also have a star).
