Bundesliga info

Before the Bundesliga was formed in 1962 German football was played based on a sub-regional basis. Regional champions and runners-up then played a series of matches for the right to compete in a final game for the national championship. In 1900, a national association, the Deutscher Fußball Bund (DFB) was founded with 86 member clubs.

Now-a-days the Bundesliga is composed of two divisions:  1. Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga  (below this leagues are generally often subdivided on a regional basis).  Every team in the Bundesliga  must have a licence to play in the league. When it comes to promotion the bottom two finishing teams in the Bundesliga are automatically relegated to the second whilst the top two finishers in the Bundesliga 2 take their place.

On an international basis the most famous clubs in the Bundesliga include Munich, Hamburger SV, Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04.
