French Ligue 1 has been a professional league since its foundation in 1932. Today Ligue 1 is made up of 20 teams with each team playing each other twice during the season. The bottom three teams of the season are relegated to French Ligue 2, and are replaced by the top three teams of Ligue 2.
The top three teams in Ligue 1 qualify for a Champions League place with the top two proceeding directly to the group phase. The fourth- and fifth-placed teams qualify for the UEFA Cup.
