History of England football team
The England national football team was founded in 1870. England played their first over (and the worlds first) international game against Scotland in 1872. Before Wembley became England's official ground there was no permanent home ground! England joined the FIFA organisation in 1906 and playing their first ever game outside British Isles in 1908. Due to a very unhappy relationship England vut their ties with Fifa and it wasn't until 1950 with a loss to USA (in the World Cup) thay they came back. England's first ever defeat at home was to Ireland in 1949 at Goodison Park. England's worst ever defeat was to Hungary ... they lost 7 - 1.
During the 1954 World Cup Broadis became the first England player to
score two goals in a game at the World Cup finals. During this period
the team was still picked by a committee until Alf Ramsey took over in
1963. It's under the management of Ramsey that the England football
team experienced its greatest ever success ... winning the 1966 World
Cup Final ... and they certainly don't let the Germans forget it.
Following that era England managed to qualify for the 1970 World Cup
but were beaten by W Germany
in the quarter finals. It wasn't until1982 that England next qualified
for a world cup but were knocked out in the second round. In 1986
England managed to make the the quarter finals and this is the only
time England have progressed beyond the World Cup quarter finals away
from home.
The next memorable success was
under the guidance of Terry Venables where England reached semi-final
of the European championship. Next came Eriksson - a bit like marmite -
you either love him or hate him ... either way England only lost five
competitive matches during his reign and managed to obtain a FIFA No.4
world ranking. McClaren was appointed in 2006 but only lasted a year
and so we come to the newest recruit Fabio Capello who took charge of
his first game in February 2008.
