Although over the last few years Bayer Leverkusen were performing badly (losing star players such as Ballack and Zé Roberto) with the coach Klaus Augenthaler taking up the role he helped avoid relegation and took the club into the Champions League the following year! Luck changed in 2005 when they got off to their worse start in two decades however they did manage to get a UEFA space.
